Jeff Tweedy at the Paramount Theatre - the marquee

Last night, Jeff Tweedy played a wonderful closer to his solo tour at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia. Hopefully some of you were able to catch the webcast I mentioned earlier.

Jeff started the set with an intimate non-PA “Someone Else’s Song.” Hearing “Spiders” was great as well, the acoustic version is a wonderful arrangement. Fortunately, we were also able to hear a couple tracks from the upcoming Sky Blue Sky, “Be Patient With Me” and “What Light.” Both songs sounded good, although the incredible acoustics of the Paramount probably contributed to that greatly.

The crowd was interesting, as Jeff pointed out, “too polite.” Jeff loves to engage the audience in settings like this and the Charlottesville crowd was really quiet. Jeff Leopard brought out a little rock from a previous show. Apparently in Texas a woman loudly asked whom he was, to which Jeff replied, “I’m Jeff Leopard.” Someone decided it would be a good idea to bring Jeff a tee shirt with Jeff Leopard on it. Most of the Jeff banter was pretty amusing and he seemed in pretty great spirits all evening.

It’s hard to pinpoint more song highlights: “Chinese Apple,” “Cars Can’t Escape,” and “New Madrid” certainly didn’t hurt. One of my personal highlights was the sequence of “Black Eye” followed by “One by One.” These are two of my favorite songs to hear Jeff play acoustic and hearing them back-to-back was moving.

The second encore was incredible. “California Stars” is another personal favorite of mine and Jeff’s arrangement of “I’m the Man Who Loves You” was fantastic. He picked up the pace and changed the guitar part, giving the song a great new face.

“Going out like he came in” Jeff stepped away from the mic to play Tupelo favorite “Acuff-Rose,” sending us out on a wonderful note of what concerts would be like should we lose all technology…not to mention the non-existence of the webcast (thanks Ken and Stan).
