Live: Tom McRae and the Artistes of Hotel Cafe at the Islington Academy – 28th November 2006

Source: theregoesthefear.com

“Tonight is all about something that doesn’t happen enough these days – Musicians helping each other” announced Tom McRae last night as the Hotel Café tour rolled into London after a year long tour of the USA. The feeling was great: a series of artists who are all too small on their own to undertake a full UK tour, but altogether they have the ability to sell out a venue in days.

Taking a revue style to the evening, Tom opened proceedings at 8:30, and we then witnessed an amazing 2 hours and 40 minutes of non stop music. No lengthy change over’s with houselights up, we’re talking one person walks off as the next comes on, with different people joining in on different tracks when they felt the urge to, before “we start to bump each to each other, drop guitars, and generally run headlong into chaos until someone makes us leave the stage”.

First song, Hawaii and the sound goes halfway through. No problem: he just keeps on strumming and talks to the crowd, explaining the tour and how the evening is going to work. One more song and he’s off, to be replaced by Steve Reynolds, who has a voice that sounds like he’s lived in a musty back-street pub for most of his life. Two songs from Steve, and he’s quickly replaced by Joe Purdy, who has, quite frankly, legendary facial hair (which leads to a comment from Tom that he “shaves once a month and if Joe doesn’t for an hour he ends up like this….”). Joe Purdy managed to be a skilled guitarist and harmonica player, a genius if ever there was one. Next up was Cary Brothers, who was one of the main reasons I had been to see the evening: his two songs “Ride” and “Blue Eyes” are some of the best around. He played “Ride” first then “Honestly”, both from his forthcoming album next year.

Then we had a very nice surprise: Aqualung. In the spirit of the real Hotel Café in LA, bands are quite welcome to turn up and play a few songs, or just sit around and get trashed with the other artists. Aqualung came and played a new song and then “Brighter than Sunshine” – just fab, and they stuck around to play keys on “Blue Eyes” later in the evening.

After this point things got a bit blurry: the artists came back on, joined each other, did different songs, until about 10:50 when Tom came back, did “Silent Boulevard”, “Boy with the Bubblegum” and “My Vampire Heart”. By this point everyone was in very high spirits, and things were getting a bit more ragged, but still very coherent, and had everyone in the crowd in exceptionally high spirits not seen since the Pipettes swept through the capital.

All in all an excellent evening of entertainment, well worth the money: not many bands this year put on 2 hours 40 minutes of non stop music: they’re playing at Kings College Student Union next week, so go and see Tom and the artistes of the Hotel Café: it’s well worth the money, and you will have one of the best evenings of the year.

Genesis Concert Tickets

Genesis Concert Tickets Genesis, a Grammy Award winning English progressive rock band formed in 1967. Genesis has sold over 150 million records, putting them safely in the top 30 of best-selling artists ever.  Genesis notable former members include Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, both of whom achieved additional success as solo artists and in other ventures. In the autumn of 2006, Peter Gabriel announced that Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford were rehearsing together again. After a 10-year indefinite hiatus, Genesis will reunite to do a massive tour in 2007. . If you have missed Collins and his crew as much as we have, you can order your tickets right now.Founded by Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks – who were only 15-years-old at the time – in 1965 in Surrey, England, the band eventually merged with another band, Anon, and two of their members Michael Rutherford and Anthony Phillips. The four were joined by Chris Stewart and called themselves “The New Anon.”

Together, The New Anon laid down demo tracks, the songs written by Phillips and Rutherford. The then-teenagers all attended Charterhouse School, which later proved to be valuable, for it was another Charterhouse alum, producer Jonathan King, who helped get the band into a recording studio. It was also King who changed the band’s name to Genesis.

Eric Clapton was born in 1945 in England, and his talent seemed to emanate from his being almost from birth. If one could attach a singular style to Clapton, the blues seem to influence all of his works. Along with his solo career, Clapton has also experienced success with bands such as the Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos. Clapton is the only artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times, which speaks not only to his talent, but also his versatility both in regards to his solo and band careers. Eric Clapton tickets are priceless in the minds of many, as his shows can include any number of legendary hits.

Cat Power @ the 9:30 Club

Source: morecowbell.net

I had the pleasure of attending Cat Power & the Memphis Rhythm Band last night at the 9:30 Club. Disclaimer: I’ve not seen Cat Power before, so I should probably be thankful this was my first show, because I thought it was very good.

With all of the stories of how Chan has terrible nervous breakdowns during her shows, I was a little anxious about the show. Although, from what I saw, it definitely appears that touring with the band and cleaning up has helped Chan calm her nerves. The Band opened with a little solo number, “Soul Serenade” that lasted for quite awhile before welcoming Cat Power to the stage. Chan looked very calm at the beginning of the show. Tea in hand, she was ready to croon a note or two with her haunting voice. Chan’s voice just gets the very bottom of my soul. The intimacy she portrays is incredibly unique and it grinds me to a halt anytime I hear her.

The Cat Power set opened with familiar numbers off her latest; the title track “The Greatest,” followed by “Living Proof,” and “Lived in Bars.” Everyone looked like they were really enjoying themselves and Chan didn’t look too nervous at this point. With the opening set composed entirely of tracks from The Greatest, Chan was showing her comfort level with the MRB and the show progressed very nicely. While, her dance moves were almost comical at times, it was clearly an attempt to stave off the onset of nerves, and I say that she should do whatever works to perform well. She ended her set with a duet on “Where Is My Love?” with the rather raspy-voiced male vocalist of the Memphis Rhythm band (sorry, couldn’t catch his name).

After another MRB track, “Since You Been Gone,” and sorry, it was not the Kelly Clarkson, which I’m sure everyone else was hoping for as much as I was…Cat Power came back on stage for the solo portion of the show. I was disappointed that only “I Don’t Blame You” was played from You Are Free, but the second set was great over-all. Chan’s nerves held up for the most part, until later in the set, when she decided it was time to loosen her jeans’ button. For what, we were not to know until the end of the show when Chan announced, “Don’t believe what they say about skinny jeans, they don’t work.”

The Band joined Cat Power for a very amusing cover of the current favorite-song-to-cover, “Crazy” ala Gnarls Barkley. After a great jazz number, “Anything But Love,” Chan came out for one last song. Unfortunately, here’s where things went the way of the typical Cat Power show, as I understand them to be. After a few small mistakes, her nerves were lost and she apologized for “sucking.” “I suck, I’ve been sucking all day,” to which the crowd refuted. After finishing the track and apologizing, Chan departed the stage with the house lights arising. It’s unfortunate that she had to go out on that, but I was pleased with the show as a whole. I felt “Crazy” would have been a great bookend, but it is what it is.

Chan emerged back on stage after a few minutes with her bouquet and started passing and tossing flowers out to audience members as they were departing the venue. It was a sweet gesture, one that unfortunately, I think was another apology for mistakes during her playing. Although, I appreciate having a flower from Chan on my desk!

I have to say that I have a lot of respect for Cat Power. After all the negative reviews she gets because of her anxiety, she’s still at it and clearly working hard to overcome them. It seems to me, she must care about putting on a great show for people, and I appreciate that.
