Calexico – Fine Line Music Cafe, 9/28/2006

Source: morecowbell.net

I haven’t had time to write about a few shows that i’ve attended over the 2 weeks, so here goes:

calexico-fineline.jpg

This was my first time seeing Calexico in over 2 years, and just over 3 years since i last saw them headline, so needless to say i was a bit excited for the show. Openers, Oakley Hall, were a rather pleasant surprise. I’d heard a lot of great things about them from various people, and i knew they had just opened for another favorite of mine, M. Ward, so i figured i would probably dig ‘em and i definitely did. Now trying to classify their sound is another task altogether. They’re just one of those bands you have to hear for yourself honestly.

Calexico played a strong, just under 2 hour set:

1. Yours and Mine
2. Gypsy’s Curse
3. Across The Wire
4. Sunken Waltz
5. Deep Down
6. Minas De Cobre
7. Roka
8. Not Even Stevie Nicks
9. Cruel
10. Mazurka
11. Alone Again Or
12. All Systems Red
13. Ojitios Traidores
14. Letter To Bowie Knife
15. Crystal Frontier

Encore:

16. Bisbee Blue (on the setlist, not played)
17. Song of Everything (w/ Oakley Hall)
18. Corona

The set was pretty varied i must say, as I was expecting a lot more from the new record, so i was quite pleased that they mixed it up quite a bit. Hearing All Systems Red (which is one of the most intense songs of the year for me) was nothing short of amazing. Whether or not they’d admit to it, the song reminds me of the slow build type of epic songs that The Frames do so well, and considering they toured together in 2003, i don’t think i’m too far off base. Their fantastic cover of Love’s Alone Again Or was a treat, and they took the opportunity to pay tribute to the late great Arthur Lee with a shout out afterward.

Lucero – The Aquarium, Fargo, ND 10/1/06

Source: morecowbell.net

Unfortunately I had to miss their 2 night stand at the Triple Rock due to a wedding, but lucky for me the wedding was 45 minutes from Fargo the day before, so i made the short trip over and caught a great early show.

Sam Lowry
, from Bloomington, IN opened up the show with a pleasant bunch of his songs. I noticed that members of Early Day Miners, a favorite of mine, played on his latest album, so i will definitely be checking that out soon.

wew-fargo.jpg

One of my favorite discoveries of the last year and a half, William Elliott Whitmore, from Lee County, Iowa, was up second. I’ve seen Will a handful of times over the last year and this set was definitely up there with the best. He turned a crowd of maybe 15-20 scragglers into i’d guess 80-100 strong by the end of his set. Not too many people were familiar with William, but by the end of his set he had them eating out of his hands. They don’t make singer/songwriters like Will much anymore unfortunately, even more reason to treasure him.

Seattle’s Rocky Votolato was up after Will, and while i enjoyed his set, i’ll admit i didn’t pay it enough attention to comment much.

lucero-fargo.jpg

It was Lucero’s first time playing in Fargo, but judging from the reaction and comments from Ben himself, certainly not the last. The crowd was full of hardcore Lucero fans who shouted along with fervor as the band tore through mostly cuts from their newest record, Rebels, Rogues, & Sworn Brothers, mixed in with a ton of requests for older songs. Ben kept commenting on how weird it was to play sober (North Dakota law, due to an All Ages show on a Sunday), and blamed it on him forgetting a few lyrics. The most amusing one was during “The War”, he forgot the words a few times, and stated that was pretty much “sacri-fuckin-ligous” to forget the words to that song. The crowd helped him get through it though. Had there not been a late show (Thunderbirds Are Now!), i’m positive Lucero would have played for another half hour at least, but i doubt anyone in the crowd was too dissapointed.

Joseph Arthur – Fine Line

Source: morecowbell.net

ja-fineline.jpg

The photo above says it all. Joseph Arthur is a born Rock Star, whether he’ll admit or not, it’s true. For those of you who are already familiar with Joseph such as myself, this tour with a full band will change everything you’ve ever thought about Joseph live (in the best way possible). Joseph has assembled a great 4 piece backing band, which includes hometown boy Kraig Jarret Johnson (ex-Jayhawks/Run Westy Run) playing guitar, singing backup, and “everything else” according to Joseph.

The set focused strongly on Joseph’s new record, Nuclear Daydream, which i’ll admit has been a slow burn for me warming up to it. But seeing/hearing the songs live, i’m much more interested in the record now.

The biggest highlights (there were plenty) of the show for me were Gary Louris joining Joseph and his band on Don’t Tell Your Eyes off of the new record. And an absolutely blistering cover of The Stooges TV Eye, which featured Joseph rolling on the floor, doing backstands, etc., in true Iggy fashion.

For the first set Joseph was sporting a totally awesome bright green 2 piece suit, when he came out for the encore, he’d changed into an all white suit. The encore started off with Joseph playing a few older songs solo acoustic, then the band joined him for the end of In The Sun and played until the end.

Joseph records almost every one of his live shows and sells them after the show, so here are a few tracks from the show on Friday:

Slide Away
You Are Free
Bonus: TV Eye (Stooges Cover)

You can purchase Joseph’s live recordings along w/ all of his other music, shirts, etc. here, most all of which feature Joseph’s own very unique and great artwork.

TV on the Radio @ First Avenue

Source: morecowbell.net

Just like autumn leaves we’re in for change

First Ave played host to a full crowd on Sunday, with everyone arriving early to check out the new blog power band Grizzly Bear. I haven’t been that into their new record Yellow House much, but I did enjoy the set. I’ll be revisiting the record more, they’ve got a nice thing going.

TV on the Radio stepped up opening with “Dirtywhirl” which brought some great energy into First Avenue that continued throughout the night. You know, one of those nights you know you were witnessing something special – could have been just me. Great versions of “I Was a Lover” and “Staring At The Sun”, though I reallly wanted to hear “Bomb Yourself”, which I always find is a fitting song for the times. A few songs seemed much more danceable in person than on the records, which suprised me a bit. There were moments though when I felt signs of difficulty from them, trying to create something to their sound – that just wasn’t there. The performance was able to hold the attention of the very young crowd though and even start a few circle pits starting on the floor. TVOTR were talkative and came across as humble to me, which seemed odd given how intense their music appears – cool though. I would recommend checking them out if you can, here is what’s left of the tour:

10.12 Opera House Concert Venue Toronto, ON Canada
10.13 Le National Montreal, Canada
10.14 Paradise Rock Club Boston, MA
10.17 Irving Plaza New York, NY

10.19 Washington, DC 9:30 Club
10.20 Sonar Lounge Baltimore, MD
10.21 Starlight Lounge Philadelphia, PA

Paul Weller Concert Tickets

Source: 911-tickets.co.uk

Don’t miss these Paul Weller tickets in wolverhampton.

As a lead singer of the most popular British band in the punk era, the Jam, Paul Weller lead audiances from country to country.  As the Jam winded down, Paul Weller started to prod into more Motown and soul. In 1983 Weller ended up in the appropriate group, Style Council. The group progressed but Weller’s persistance to soul music lead him to the point in his career where he couldn’t get a contract in 1990. As an independent artist, Paul Weller returned to soul music, mixing in a progressive and hippie style. Weller regained his popularity in the UK releasing several solo records. Paul Weller had his greatest success with Stanley Road entering the charts at number one and eventually selling nearly a million copies in the UK. Although Stanley Road had mixed reviews, it gained Weller the much lost ground since the Jam and put him once again in a respectable seat in the industry. Paul Weller returned in the summer of 1997 with Heavy Soul, further influencing the British rock scene. He released Heliocentric in spring of 2000, claiming it was his last studio recording.

Tickets For The Scissor Sisters UK

Source: 911-tickets.co.uk

Buy your tickets for one of the best shows to hit the UK.  These Scissor Sisters tickets are sure to sell out.  Scooping a trio of Brit Awards on all counts possible in 2005, the Scissor Sisters have come from nowhere to become one of the most unique and popular bands in recent years.  The Scissor Sisters tickets bring with it a vibrant flavour of native New York sound.  Musically, Scissor Sisters seem to cut and paste influences from all over the shop, from Pink Floyd to The Bee Gees. But the Scissor Sisters will give you a refreshing blow to an otherwise sterile pop scene, flood your mind with an excess of monotonous dance tack.  In 2006, Scissor Sisters comes back to Wembley Arena London, Manchester, Birmingham and other cities in the UK.

Free Andrew Bird Show and Q+A!

Source: morecowbell.net

If you missed out on tickets for Andrew’s Bryant Lake Bowl shows, here is your chance to see him:

Making Music featuring: Andrew Bird

In the Minneapple creating his album due out next spring, the incredibly talented Andrew Bird visits the Whole Music Club to talk shop, spin some mysteries and cast a spell on us all over again. While we usually scoff at the snarky Pitchfork reviews, we had to agree with David Raposa, “Andrew Bird’s voice is the spoonful of sugar that makes this medicine go down so smooth. Much like his violin playing and his whistling and his songwriting, Bird’s voice is versatile, simultaneously recalling Paul Simon’s conversational croon, Rufus Wainwright’s self-aware drama, and Thom Yorke’s mournful wail. He can hang on one word and give it emotional heft, and he can nail a line like “and I’m gonna tie your wrists with leather/ and drill a tiny hole in your head” with the nonchalant whimsy it requires.”This fall, the Whole Music Club presents the fourth season of Making Music, a series that features long-format discussions with talented musicians about their art. Local musician JG Everest (Lateduster, Vicious Vicious) hosts the show, which includes interviews, live demonstrations, videos, exclusive and unreleased tracks, prizes, and Q+A from the audience. These events are free, all-ages, open to the public, and start at 8pm.

Eric Idle based the book of the musical on the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” the screenplay for which Idle wrote with fellow Pythons Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.

Directed by Mike Nichols (Tony-winning productions of Barefoot in the Park, Luv, The Odd Couple, Plaza Suite, The Prisoner of Second Avenue and The Real Thing), Spamalot won the Tony Award for Best Musical of 2005 plus the Drama Desk and Outer Critics’ Circle awards in the same category. Nichols was also honored with the Tony for his direction.
Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur, and the Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail, Spamalot features a chorus line of dancing divas (and serfs), flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits and a legless knight.
