Lucero - The Aquarium, Fargo, ND 10/1/06

Unfortunately I had to miss their 2 night stand at the Triple Rock due to a wedding, but lucky for me the wedding was 45 minutes from Fargo the day before, so i made the short trip over and caught a great early show.
Sam Lowry, from Bloomington, IN opened up the show with a pleasant bunch of his songs. I noticed that members of Early Day Miners, a favorite of mine, played on his latest album, so i will definitely be checking that out soon.

One of my favorite discoveries of the last year and a half, William Elliott Whitmore, from Lee County, Iowa, was up second. I’ve seen Will a handful of times over the last year and this set was definitely up there with the best. He turned a crowd of maybe 15-20 scragglers into i’d guess 80-100 strong by the end of his set. Not too many people were familiar with William, but by the end of his set he had them eating out of his hands. They don’t make singer/songwriters like Will much anymore unfortunately, even more reason to treasure him.
Seattle’s Rocky Votolato was up after Will, and while i enjoyed his set, i’ll admit i didn’t pay it enough attention to comment much.

It was Lucero’s first time playing in Fargo, but judging from the reaction and comments from Ben himself, certainly not the last. The crowd was full of hardcore Lucero fans who shouted along with fervor as the band tore through mostly cuts from their newest record, Rebels, Rogues, & Sworn Brothers, mixed in with a ton of requests for older songs. Ben kept commenting on how weird it was to play sober (North Dakota law, due to an All Ages show on a Sunday), and blamed it on him forgetting a few lyrics. The most amusing one was during “The War”, he forgot the words a few times, and stated that was pretty much “sacri-fuckin-ligous” to forget the words to that song. The crowd helped him get through it though. Had there not been a late show (Thunderbirds Are Now!), i’m positive Lucero would have played for another half hour at least, but i doubt anyone in the crowd was too dissapointed.
