Yo La Tengo at the 9:30 Club

Last night Yo La Tengo played the second night of their tour at Washington, DC’s the 9:30 Club. Why? opened, but unfortunately I couldn’t get there to see them, because I was selling wine. People seemed to have generally enjoyed them though.
The set started off in a bit of a lull, with “The Weakest Part” beginning the set and followed up (strangely, IMO) with “The Story of Yo La Tengo.” The band sounded great, so I was willing to hold out for what I hoped would be an improving tracklist. I wasn’t disappointed as “Stockholm Syndrome” came next. My highlight of the night was the sequences of “Sudden Organ,” “Pass the Hatchet,” “Watch Out For Me Ronnie,” “From a Motel Six,” and “Deeper Into Movies.” It was nice to finally see the energy I was hoping that the gang would bring. The show rounded out with several covers after Ira remarked that it’s been a sucky year for people dying. He mentioned Syd Barret and Arthur Lee, and then rolled into “Luci Baines” by Mr. Lee. After just over two hours, the show concluded with a request from someone in the front row, “Paul is Dead.” This request brought the most amusing band/crowd exchange as Ira couldn’t remember the song and told us “To talk amongst (yourselves) for awhile,” while he attempted to remember the melody. People kept yelling out requests, to which Ira replied, “Ok, I can only remember one of these songs at time.”
The crowd’s energy and mood seemed wavering at times, but overall the feeling was definitely positive, especially the two crazy dancers…but then again aren’t there always a few of those?
